A New Chess Variant for Gaming AI
نویسنده
چکیده
In this article, we explain a new chess variant that is more challenging for humans than the standard version of the game. A new rule states that either player has the right to switch sides if a ‘chain’ or link of pieces is created on the board. This appears to increase significantly the complexity of chess, as perceived by players, but not the actual size of its game tree. ‘Search’ therefore becomes less of an issue. The advantage of this variant is that it allows research into board games to focus on the ‘higher level’ aspects of intelligence by building upon the approaches used in existing chess engines. We argue that this new variant can therefore more easily contribute to gaming AI than other games of

Action-Based Discretization for AI Search
As computer gaming reaches ever-greater heights in realism, we can expect the complexity of simulated dynamics to reach further as well. To populate such gaming environments with agents that behave intelligently, there must be some means of reasoning about the consequences of agent actions. Such ability to seek out the ramifications of various possible action sequences, commonly called “lookahe...

Computer games are viewed by academics as un-grounded hack and patch experiments. Academic artificial intelligence is often viewed as un-implementable and narrow minded by the majority of non-AI programmer. By implementing several well known AI techniques into the same gaming environment and judging users reactions this project aims to make links between the academic nature of AI, as well as in...

One of the major commercial applications of AI is in the rapidly expanding computer game industry. Virtually every game sold today has some sort of AI, from the "computer player" in a chess game to the machine-gun-toting enemies in a first-person shooter (FPS). Any virtual being that does not behave in a strictly pre-scripted manner has some sort of AI behind it. Sadly, however, the multi-billi...

Game playing is one of the most important areas in AI. Chess is a very popular two-player strategy board game. In the context of AI, chess falls under the category of adversarial games where the opponent tries to reduce your chance of winning as much as possible. Being a classic example of a two-player zero sum game (sum of the utilities of agent and opponent is zero), the game of chess provide...

Making decisions under uncertainty remains one of the central problems in AI research. Unfortunately, most uncertain real-world problems are so complex that any progress in them is extremely dif cult. Games model some elements of the real world, and offer a more controlled environment for exploring methods for dealing with uncertainty. Chess and chess-like games have long been used as a strateg...
